What and Who are hashira in demon slayer (Kimetsu No Yaiba)?

The Demon Slayer Corps' highest-ranking combatants are the Hashira (Pillars). As such, they are the organization's most elite and formidable warriors, each playing a critical role in their conflict with Muzan Kibutsuji and the Twelve Kizuki. Among all Demon Slayers, protecting humanity from more deadly threats that other Demon Slayers cannot handle.

What is the purpose of Hashira?

The purpose of hashira is to fight demons and the specifically main objective is to fight Muzan Kibutsuji and the Twelve Kizuki. Once a hashira is always a hashira, that's the fundamental code of Hashiras of Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Giyu Tomioka is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the current Water Hashira and a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps (Mizu Bashira).

Giyu is a tall, muscular young guy with a pale complexion who is virtually always seen with a solemn, emotionless gaze. He has unkempt black hair that stands up in tufts around his head and is tied up in a low sloppy ponytail at the base of his neck.

Giyu always has a stony, unfazed expression on his face. He does, however, have a reserved nature and a strong sense of justice, with no tolerance for those who are unaware of their own limitations and waste their lives. Despite allowing Nezuko Kamado to survive due to Tanjiro Kamado's tenacity, he has no qualms about killing other demons and has neither respect or mercy for them, as most Demon Slayers do. Nonetheless, Giyu violated the Demon Slayer Corps' code of conduct without hesitation in order to safeguard Nezuko during Shinobu's assassination attempt. This implies that, unlike some other Hashira, he is ready to make an exception for a demon by allowing them to live as long as they do not kill and eat humans. This demonstrates that he is more pragmatic when dealing with demons rather than allowing his preconceptions to cloud his judgement.

Kyojuro Rengoku is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba's Mugen Train Arc. He is also a Demon Slayer and the Demon Slayer Corps' Flame Hashira.

Kyojuro was a tall young adult with a muscular-athletic frame. He is noted to be personable and to exude immense positivity, with an exuberant smile on his face almost all of the time. Kyojuro was ecstatic about his responsibilities as a Hashira, and he often came across as joyfully eccentric. He was friendly, pure of heart, and possessed excellent dexterity and swordsmanship as a result of rigorous practise and discipline. He was an honourable warrior who followed his mother's code of values and ideals, the most important of which was his belief that those who were born powerful have a duty to protect the vulnerable.

Mitsuri is a curvy young woman of ordinary height and strong build, with a slightly pale complexion and round, pale green eyes framed by long eyelashes, each with a little beauty mark beneath them. Mitsuri is an extremely emotional, passionate, and joyful person who continually complements people in her brain, which likely contributes to her moniker "the Hashira of Love." Gyomei Himejima is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the current Stone Hashira and a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps (Iwa Bashira). Gyomei also serves as Genya Shinazugawa's mentor.

Gyomei stands tall among the Demon Slayers. He is one of the series' tallest characters, towering over his fellow Hashira. He has a strong build and a lot of muscle. He has spiky black hair and a scar that runs horizontally across his brow. Gyomei personifies the gentle giant archetype, despite his formidable stature, being surprisingly soft-spoken and sympathetic. He is also shown to be highly religious, always carrying his prayer beads and praying in difficult situations. Most notably, Gyomei easily cries over trivial matters, emphasising his relatively soft personality.

Sanemi Shinazugawa is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the current Wind Hashira and a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps (Kaze Bashira). Sanemi is also the older brother of Demon Slayer Genya Shinazugawa, who fought alongside Tanjiro Kamado and Nezuko Kamado. Sanemi and his partner Masachika Kumeno vanquished the former Lower Rank One, Ubume, before becoming Hashira, with Masachika dying as a result.

Sanemi is a tall, strong man with long, spiky white hair and huge light purple eyes. His face and torso are covered with wounds from his years of fighting demons. Between the Rehabilitation Training Arc and the Mugen Train Arc, he cuts his hair short. He is frequently seen with a wild expression on his face. Sanemi is abrasive, hot-tempered, reckless, and headstrong, and she is frequently impulsive and quick to lash out. He is frequently inattentive to people and is exceedingly irritable. Muichiro Tokito is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the current Mist Hashira and a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps (Kasumi Bashira). Muichiro, like his brother Yuichiro Tokito, is descended from Upper Rank One, Kokushibo.

Muichiro is a young man of low stature with a lean muscular body and long, straight black hair that fades to mint green towards his waist. He wears his hair free, with two clusters jutting slightly from each side of his head, a pair of slightly shorter hair left down to frame his face, and wild bangs over his brow. In addition, he has huge, empty-looking mint-green eyes. His eyes and hair are similar to those of his twin brother, Yuichiro Tokito. Muichiro is a scatterbrained individual who appears to be continuously lost in thought and unable to concentrate on anything. He is impassive and, at times, obtuse. He thinks only for himself and operates solely on logic, never allowing emotion to guide him, making him appear entirely apathetic and uncaring. But Tanjiro had the impression that Muichiro wasn't being deliberately apathetic because he didn't exude any malice.

Obanai Iguro is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is the current Serpent Hashira and a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps (Hebi Bashira).

Obanai is a short, stocky man with a light skin and a powerful build. He has straight-edged black hair in varied lengths, the longest reaching his shoulders and the shortest halting at his cheekbones, which he wears down with two shorter strands falling between his eyes. His eyes are almond-shaped, with a slight upward tilt on the far sides, and are heterochromic. Obanai is a stern and strict guy who is unconcerned about individuals who do not follow the Demon Slayer regulations. He has unreasonable expectations of his fellow Demon Slayers, berating Tengen Uzui for sustaining large wounds against the "weakest" Upper Rank and demanding him to "fight to the death" when Tengen refuses to retire.

Tengen Uzui is a key supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and a pivotal figure in the Entertainment District Arc. He was a former Demon Slayer Corps member who served as the prior Sound Hashira (Oto Bashira). Tengen is a tall, broad-shouldered man with lightly tanned complexion and white hair. His hair is of varying lengths, with the longest strands reaching his shoulders, and it is arranged with three prominent, shorter clusters arching up to fall as bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face. Tengen is an eccentric and flashy individual who is always trying to be "flamboyant," with a craving for everything to be dazzling and remarkable, even proclaiming himself to be the god of flashiness and festivals. This is demonstrated when he becomes enthusiastic about how "flamboyant" it would be if Tanjiro Kamado's blood vessels exploded and tries to drag Aoi Kanzaki off to the Entertainment District with him to aid him with a perilous mission, even spanking her.

9. Shinobu Kocho(Insect Hashira)

Shinobu Kocho is a key character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is the current Insect Hashira and a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps (Mushi Bashira).

Shinobu Kocho is Kanae Kocho's younger sister, as is her adopted younger sister Kanao Tsuyuri. Shinobu joined the Demon Slayer Corps alongside her sister after a demon killed her parents in order to prevent others from experiencing the same fate as her.

Shinobu is a small young woman with a pale skin and huge, compound-like eyes that lack pupils and instead have a haze of gradient purple, giving her eyes the appearance of insect eyes. Her hair is black wavy and fades to dark purple, styled into a flat yakai-maki bun at the back of her head and tied with a white, turquoise, and light purple butterfly adornment. Shinobu has a bright, welcoming, and happy temperament, and she always has an easygoing smile on her face no matter what situation she is in. Her outward conduct, however, is quickly revealed to be a ruse. This is seen in the way she enjoys taunting others, to the point of being sadistic about it, most notably picking on Giyu.

10. Jigoro Kuwajima(Former Thunder Hashira )

Jigoro Kuwajima is the mastermind of Zenitsu Agatsuma and Kaigaku's training. He was originally the Demon Slayer Corps' Thunder Hashira (Nari Bashira).

Jigoro was a short, elderly guy with prominent wrinkles on his forehead and wide, slanted eyes, as well as a straight scar with six prongs running along his right cheekbone. He had bushy brows and a thick moustache, as well as sleek white hair that he had smoothed down to puff out at the base of his skull, with a fringe brushed back away from his face. Jigoro was devoted to his students and tough in his training. Despite his position as a strong mentor and his past Hashira experience, he had a soft spot and unflinching passion to nurturing the next generation of pupils. Kanae Kocho, the late Flower Hashira, was a Demon Slayer. She was murdered some years before the current story. She is also Shinobu Kocho's biological older sister and Kanao Tsuyuri's adopted older sister.

Kanae had a slim physique, similar to her younger sister, who was tall for her age and had bright red lips in contrast to her pale face. She wore her long, straight black hair down to her waist, with two shorter bunches over her shoulders and arched, ear-length bangs on either side of her face. Kanae is shown as a kind young lady with a laid-back disposition; throughout Shinobu and Kanao's memories, she is virtually always seen with a nice smile on her face. When Sanemi Shinazugawa retaliated against their leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, she showed concern for Kagaya and gently educated Sanemi about how much Kagaya genuinely loves about the Demon Slayers under his command.

12. Sakonji Urokodaki(Former Water Hashira)

Sakonji Urokodaki is a former Demon Slayer Corps member who served as the previous Water Hashira (Mizu Bashira). He is the primary Water Breathing cultivator, having trained Giyu Tomioka, Tanjiro Kamado, Sabito, and Makomo.

Sakonji's face is never shown or depicted in the manga; he is always seen wearing a tengu mask that covers his full face, despite Tanjiro stating in a Taisho Secret that Sakonji's face is very peaceful and quiet. While he may appear to be a gruff, cantankerous old man at first, this masks an extraordinarily sympathetic demeanour. Though he drives his students hard, he also cares profoundly for them, treating them as if they were family, and is one of the few Demon Slayer Corps figures who completely trusts Nezuko not to eat a human. Similarly, he has complete faith in Tanjiro's ability to restore her humanity.

Shinjuro Rengoku is the husband of Ruka Rengoku and the father of Kyojuro Rengoku and Senjuro Rengoku. He once served as the Demon Slayer Corps' Flame Hashira (En Bashira).

Shinjuro has unruly orange hair that flares out about his face, growing redder near the ends above his ears, and that he wears messily knotted up behind his head, much like his sons Kyojuro Rengoku and Senjuro Rengoku. Shinjuro is a rather short-tempered guy, especially when it comes to the Demon Slayer Corps and his son, Kyojuro, both of which enrage him. During his fight with Tanjiro, he looks to be nasty, mocking the recently departed Kyojuro and knocking Senjuro to the ground.
